Life is busy and there seems to be an ever-growing list of jobs to do! One of those important jobs is remembering to check and re-order your heating oil. Run outs do happen, but they can be costly and very inconvenient.

Here are our top tips on how to avoid running out:

Install a digital monitoring system

There are now many different monitoring systems that allow you to keep an eye on your oil level from your kitchen or even on your smartphone!

Check your tank level regularly

Why not set an alarm on your phone each month to remind yourself to check your tank level? Regular checks mean you are more likely to notice when you are running low and can place an order well in advance!

Upgrade security around your oil tank

Heating oil theft is not common, but it does happen occasionally. Consider installing a padlock on your tank at the very least, you could also install lighting and CCTV for added security.

What if I do run out?

If you find that you have run out of heating oil, contact us as soon as possible so we can place an order for you. At busier times of the year you may have to wait a few days for delivery or pay a premium for a faster delivery.

It is worth double checking your tank level using a cane or stick to confirm that you have definitely run out of oil. There may be another reason that your heating has stopped working, such as a problem with your tank, boiler or fuel line.

It may be worth investing in some alternative forms of heating such as electric radiators or heaters for use in emergencies.

If your tank has run out of oil completely, you will need to contact your boiler engineer after you have had a delivery. This is because sludge and dirt that sits in the bottom of your tank may have become sucked into your systems filters and fuel lines. The engineer will need to clean the filters and fuel lines before your boiler can be restarted.
